Tuesday at 4pm is when it’s “legal” to sign free agents. The NFL had implemented a “legal tampering period” three days prior to the start of Free Agency and there have been tons of deals reported; they just won’t be official until 4:01pm tomorrow. The Bills just locked up Jerry Hughes for five years and traded for LeSean McCoy and Matt Cassel. The only casualties of free agency are CJ Spiller and Da’Norris Searcy. Searcy is the only piece they will need to replace unless Duke Williams blossoms in his 3rd year. The Bills may move Corey Graham to safety and look to find a true second corner to play opposite Gilmore. The positions of need for the Bills are Quarterback, Offensive Line and Tight End. The fact that the Pegula’s own the team allow the Bills to structure contracts in ways we’ve never seen before. It allows a lot more flexibility and scalability to get more deals done. Despite all the big moves already made, the Bills can afford a few more. So who will they be targeting? Brian Bulaga is my first choice in FA signing to help the line. He played tackle in Green Bay, but he’s more suited at guard.

The Bills could kick him inside where he’s better suited physically and allow them some options to move Glenn to the other guard spot and run with two new tackles. Bulaga didn’t quite live up to his expectations in Green Bay, but a new system that’s more run than pass could provide a better atmosphere for him in which to succeed. Orlando Franklin is another option on the line, but he might already have a deal in place. He plays both tackle and guard and could provide the option of switch guys around to other positions on the line if signed. He’s a big dude at 6’7” 320 lbs. but could have a little more mobility than was shown by our guys last year. In a ground-and-pound game, you need big guys that can move. Clint Boling from the Bengals would also be a good pick up. He’s a true guard and has good size and mobility. He’s only 25 and comes from Georgia, a southern school, and we know how we love our southern college players. Outside of these three guys you’d be looking at plug-and-play-type players and hoping for the best. Some notable names would be Justin Blalock, James Carpenter, and Dan Connelly.

The Bills definitely have to find a play-making tight end. Even though Chandler somehow makes great plays and gets open despite running slower than I can walk, he doesn’t draw attention from opposing defenses. Julius Thomas is the number one FA, but I don’t think the Bills have a shot at him. Jordan Cameron on the surface is the ideal tight end for the Bills, but he’s had several concussions and missed a lot of time last year. Charles Clay, the former Dolphins Tight End, has been rumored to be coveted by the Bills. His salary won’t be too demanding, perhaps around five million a season, and he’s a play maker but lacks the size of a true tight end. Unfortunately, outside of those three you’re not finding much. A few names I’d watch for are Ed Dickson, Lance Kendricks, and Matt Spaeth. Kendricks has the most potential coming from the Rams. He’d be a nice check down option for whomever the QB will be, and he can run block.

There might be a few surprise signings as well. I look for them to sign either a safety or cornerback and maybe both. There are a lot of safeties available with Searcy’s talent. I like Marcus Gilchrist, and I think he’s a good versatile back that can cover and play the run. He’s 5’10 and weighs 200 pounds but is strong. He put up 225 lbs. 26 times at the combine and can run the 40 in 4.45 seconds. Outside of him they can really grab anyone for depth. I think the ship has sailed on the Revis reunion with Rex Ryan. Antonio Cromartie is available and played very well for Ryan with the Jets once Revis left. He’s 30 years old and has a few more years left. They could also go after a guy like Chris Clemons as well who’s got the size to possibly be a press coverage type corner. Outside of those guys there are a bunch of guys who are all basically the same. They all are sub-6’ feet tall and all run 40 yards in 4.40 seconds.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Bills bring in another QB. Sanchez and Mallett are off the market, but I’d like to see them go after Colt McCoy or Jake Locker. Both are young and have shown flashes of ability to start in the NFL. The Bills can cut Cassel with little monetary repercussions, but if EJ doesn’t work out, then they still have a veteran and a younger mobile QB.

So, Bills fans, what are your thoughts? Who do you want them to sign? Leave us a comment here and follow us on Facebook and Twitter @wgoinbuffalo and me @jasonsins. Man I can’t wait for the 2015 season!
