Is This The New King of the Cassel?

Another day and another trade at One Bills Drive. This time we’ve landed a QB. That’s right, the moment we’ve all been waiting for; drum roll please… It’s being reported the Bills are going to send undisclosed later round picks to the Vikings in order to acquire Matt Cassel and a pick in return. The Bills QBs on the roster will be EJ Manuel, Jeff Tuel and Matt Cassel. I’m assuming Cassel will fill that veteran leadership role in helping EJ Manuel next year. If he ends up being the starter though, I’m pretty sure Bills fans are going to lose their minds!

Perhaps you don’t know the story of Matt Cassel, so allow me to refresh your memory. In 2008, the greatest year in Bills fans recent history, Tom Brady went down with a magnificent knee injury, and the Patriots had to turn to a QB named Matt Cassel. His arm wasn’t very strong, and he didn’t look the part of a starting QB. But despite all the talk of that year being a wash for the Patriots, Cassel led them to a 10-6 season, narrowly missing the playoffs. He completed 63% of his passes for 3,693 yards, 21 TDs and 11 INTs.

The Kansas City Chiefs thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread and traded a 2nd round pick for him the following year even though the Patriots had Franchise Tagged him.   He had one winning season with the Chiefs, in 2010, taking the Chiefs to a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance.  After 3 terrible years out of four, the Chiefs parted ways with the QB, and he went to the Minnesota Vikings.  He didn’t do much better there, eventually losing the QB job to a plethora of QBs.

I know that recap makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, but let’s be honest; there’s no way he’s the starting QB come week one of the regular season. The Bills have been looking for a veteran to help EJ for the last two seasons. Kevin Kolb was taken out by a wet mat, and EJ couldn’t stay on the field in his rookie year. Marrone sabotaged EJ in his second year with his lack of guidance and turning to Orton to save his job.  Will the Bills have any more moves up their sleeves? Are they basically treating this draft as a lost draft? With no 1st or 4th round picks and possibly trading away a 5th or 6th round this year for Cassel leaves them low on picks. It’s possible the Bills feel they can solve things in the short term via Free Agency. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another QB added in the next 10 days.

So what do you think Buffalo? Do you like the move? Who was your choice for QB this year? Make sure you leave us your comments and follow us on Facebook and Twitter @wgoinbuffalo and me @jasonsins.
