Ok Bills fans time to put on the Zubas and strap up the hidden beer holders as its time to kick off the last eight games of the Season. This Sunday the Bills take on a familiar foe in the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills and Chiefs have squared off every year since 2008. The Bills hold a 4-2 record against the Chiefs over that stretch. So what can we expect this Sunday for the 2014 show down? To predict that lets look back at those previous games for some clues and expectations.

Back in 2008 the Bills and Chiefs faced off in a game that would live in infamy. Ok maybe not, but it did pit the future HC Chan Gailey (OC of the Chiefs at the time) and future Bills QB Tyler Thigpen against a potent Bills team lead by the men they would replace; Dick Jauron and Trent Edwards! Ok you can stop laughing, maybe potent was the wrong word. If you looked at the score though potent may have been right as the Bills crushed the Chiefs 54 to 31!

In 2009 Fitzpatrick took over the reins as QB for the Bills and began his first of four match-ups against one of the most dangerous, prolific passers in the league; Matt Cassel. Fitzpatrick amazed with his stat line of 12-20 for 86 yards 1 TD (to T.O.) and 1 INT. The Bills went on to win 16 to 10. Fitzpatrick would drop the next year’s contest 13-10 (OT) despite it being an emotional game as Chan Gailey was now the Bills Head Coach. In 2011 Gailey got his revenge. The Amish Rifle went ballistic throwing 4TDs and breaking the 200 yard mark in a 41 to 7 Bills thrashing. In the fourth and final game of the Fitzpatrick vs Cassel annual series, the Bills again would beat the Chiefs 35-17. This would be Gailey’s last season as the Head Coach of the Bills but he sure knew how to beat the Chiefs going 3-1 against his old team.

The match up in 2013 Introduced Doug Marrone to party. The Bills were down to their backup’s backup at QB having to start Jeff Tuel with Manuel and Lewis both injured. The Chiefs were undefeated but the Bills defense was amazing and the game was close. Jeff Tuel threw a key interception inside the 5 yard line that allowed the Chiefs to tie the game and eventually go onto win.

So the trip down memory lane was nice but how does the 2014 Bills and Chiefs matchup? In my opinion the Bills are the Better team even though the team rankings don’t show it. The Bills are 23rd in Passing offense, 24th in rushing offense, 21st in total points and 28th in total yards. The Chiefs are 31st in Passing Offense, 6th in Rushing offense, 15th in Points and 26th in total yards. Both Defenses have dangerous pass rushers. The Chiefs have Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Houston is leading the league in Sacks with 12. The Bills front four has 21 sacks this season. The Bills Passing attack is better now that Orton is QB and the Chiefs have yet to throw a TD to a WR! However the Chiefs have a great rushing attack with Charles and Davis whereas the Bills are struggling with just 2.3 YPC. The Bills defense does rank 6th against the run but have yet to face a rushing attack like the Chiefs. The Bills are also 9th against the pass and are 7th on total yards allowed. The Chiefs however are better as they are 5th in total defense, 1st against the pass and 2nd in points allowed. They are vulnerable against the run where they rank 15th but the Bills currently stink at running. I’m still picking the Bills over the Chiefs 31-17. I think Orton and the passing game unload early even if Watkins is out. Chris Hogan will have a great game and Bryce Brown makes his case to be next years starting RB.

The Bills are facing some key injuries. Watkins and Jackson are battling groin injuries. Watkins missed 2 days of practice and Jackson was back working with the team but on a limited basis. Both Players are listed as questionable for the game. Goodwin is back so the Bills have their deep threat back. If Watkins can’t go look for Woods and Williams to fill his role while Hogan works the Middle of the field out of the slot. Hogan is my Bills sleeper this week. The Chiefs are without their top two Inside Linebackers but they’ve adjusted nicely. If the defense can do what it did last year to the Chiefs the game is ours. We need common sense to win. Orton has to be smart and not turn the ball over. The Offensive line must protect him and hopefully Hackett figured out the running game over the bye.

This is a must win game. The Chiefs currently hold a wild card spot. If the Bills win they will be the sole owners of a wild card spot as long as they keep winning. If the Dolphins beat the Lions this week then next week’s Thursday night game in Miami becomes another must win as the Dolphins are ½ game behind us. The Bills must also contend with the entire AFC North Division as every team but the Ravens only have 3 losses. The Browns look tough after thumping the Bengals last night 24-3. The Browns also get Josh Gordon when the Bills play the Browns in 3 weeks. The Browns also have 3 good running backs and a really good TE. This game could also be another must win for the Bills as they need to separate themselves from the 3 loss pack of teams in the AFC. Looking past the month of November it seems December is filled with losses. Can the Bills beat the Broncos in Denver, Packers in Buffalo or Patriots in Foxborough? The only winnable game appears to be Oakland. I really don’t want to have the Bills needing to beat the Patriots in Foxborough in order to make the playoffs. The Bills haven’t won at Gillette stadium ever and the last win in Foxborough was at the old Foxborough Stadium in 2000. As i stated before, the Bills really need to win the next four weeks to even have a shot at the playoffs.

Well Bills fans what do you think? How do you feel about our chances against the Chiefs? What’s your outlook or prediction on the last 8 games? Is this the year the Bills make the playoffs? As always leave me a comment here and make sure to follow us on facebook and twitter @wgoinbuffalo and me @jasonsins. Its 1 game at a time boys, let’s get that W this Sunday!
