It’s funny how things work out sometimes.

Here's the coaster!!!!

Here’s the coaster!!!!

A month ago, while at Resurgence Brewery with my wife and some friends, I noticed a coaster with a picture of “The Dude.”

Now, if you haven’t seen “The Big Lebowski,” it’s a Coen brothers film that stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, and Julianne Moore. Personally, I think it’s one of the funniest films I’ve ever seen, but it’s not for everyone. “The Dude” is a character played with amazing simplicity by Bridges and is a holdover from the 70’s pacifist movement. It’s a cult classic, and “The Dude” is considered by many to be an iconic role.

Now we see the coaster, and everyone is intrigued. The Dude Hates Cancer?

“Hell, yeah! That’s something we should get behind,” said Josh.

“I’ll look into it,” I said.

And then a month went by as life caught up to me. Again, though, it’s funny how things work out. Earlier this week I received a request from someone to share their event. You probably guessed it, it was someone from The Dude Hates Cancer. We said, “of course,” and they invited us to check out their event. It was a home-brewers competition that featured over 25 brewers from the Western New York area. The winner of this competition would get their beer brewed and served at Resurgence!

Brewers

Todd Bosworth and Matt Roth made a Milk Stout that was named the “White Russian Stout” one of many Big Lebowski inspired drinks!!!!

When I got there I met, Tim Maxwell, the founder and organizer of the event. Tim started the non-profit venture, which benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in Philadelphia back in 2006 and has expanded it to the Buffalo area.

The event was a full success, raising $2,081 and highlighting some amazing local beers! The event also featured Keith Curtachio and the Niagara Association of Homebrewers, Andy Urban and the Sultans of Swig, and lots of tasty beers! The winner ended up being Gregory Arcara, whose Hoobajoob IPA won the People’s Choice award! Greg will be brewing his competition-winning beer at Resurgence sometime in the near future.

Here’s the lowdown on the rest of the best!!! We are only picking a few, but they were all good. In fact, there wasn’t one beer that I didn’t like, which made choosing any one beer over another very difficult.

  • Jason Dunshie’s – German Wheat “Das Dingy” – Jason’s beer was fantastic and very refreshing. He’s a West Side homebrewer, and I’ve been lucky enough to try some of his other beers.
  • Doug Parker and Aaron Boczkowski – Milk Stout “The Hair Of The Dude Caucasian Milk Stout – This beer was fantastic and clever. Strong, but with a little sweet; it was quite the tasty beer.
  • Tuck and Wink – IPA – “The Treehorn” – This beer was a clever ode to one of the characters of the Big Lebowski, Jackie Treehorn. This character is a tough guy with a a supposed heart of gold. The beer was very much like the character of the movie with a strong pop and smooth finish!
  • Mike Cooke – Milk Stout – “Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout – This was a personal favorite of mine. It literally tasted like a Reese’s cup exploded in your mouth!!
  • Andrew Urban – Grodziskie – Sour Patch Poles – This was by far the most eclectic beer I saw all day. It tasted like having a beer with a Polish Sausage though you weren’t eating one! The flavor was not even from Polish Sausage. It came from the way the beer was distilled in the oak containers. It was quite the experience!

They have another event coming up this Saturday the 23rd, and it involves: what else? Bowling, of course! So do yourself a favor, and see the movie “The Big Lebowski,” Then get on board with The Dude Hates Cancer, because as The Dude would say: “This Cancer Will Not Stand Man!”
