Why Byron Brown Should Give Terry Pegula the Key to the City

“Who the hell is Terry Pegula?”

That’s what I said back in 2011 when I first  heard he was buying the Sabres.

Maybe I was under a rock, or in an intense food coma, but I didn’t even know the Sabres were for sale.  At that point I had no idea just how awesome Terry Pegula was going to be to Buffalo.

As I’m writing this post, news outlets are reporting that he put a bid in for the Bills of  $1.3 Billion.  To put that into perspective, someone would have to win the $1 million prize on America’s Got Talent 1300 times in order to match that amount.  By putting in that bid, Uncle Terry is saving us from the force of free markets that normally wouldn’t be kind to a small town like ours.

It’s Economics 101 that bigger cities have more wealth.  I won’t bore you with all of the reasons why, even with all the revenue sharing the NFL does, more money would be made in a bigger city than here in Buffalo.

Other than the similarities his hometown shares with Buffalo, I literally have no idea why he has such a crush on our beloved city.  I heard stories of him stopping at a rest stop on the highway and calling someone on a payphone (I just confused everyone under 30) just to check the score. But why?

I have no idea.

But with his bid, he’s using his massive wealth to shield us from the vultures in big cities like Toronto, Los Angeles and London.

That’s reason number 1 why he should get the key to the city.

We all know the other reasons. The fact that he bought the Sabres. The fact that he is spending $172 million on HarborCenter. That’s 172 America’s Got Talent prizes by the way.

In addition to all that, his company just leased some office space in the former HSBC tower that was about to be 90% vacant.

Yeah, I know the Sabres could have been beaten by any high school hockey team this year, and there was some drama in the front office with Pat LaFontaine. Whatever.  I’m sure the team will get better.  Forget all of that. The positives by far outweigh the negatives.

I’m also not naive. I know he’s not buying the Bills out of pure altruism.  He knows he’ll make money off it. NFL teams are rumored to make over $100 million a year.  Bucky Gleason of The Buffalo News thinks his ego has something to do with it too.  But regardless of his reasons why, he’s still really helping us out.

Some people will say he’ll mess up the Bills like he did the Sabres. To those people I say, “How could they get any worse?” They haven’t been in the playoffs since 1999 which means they literally haven’t been in the playoffs THIS MILLENNIUM.

Finally, to those who think he doesn’t deserve the Key to the City, remember, we gave it to Terrell Owens. Enough said.

Mayor Brown, just give Terry the key already. Show him we appreciate him.

I completely agree! More than just a key to the city! There should be a Pegula Day and a parade. Because heaven know Buffalonians like a good excuse to party anyway!
