Screw It Buffalo Is Back! Don’t Be Afraid To Say It!

“There was a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish, it was so fragile.” – Marcus Aurelius

The quotation above was taken from the movie “Gladiator”, and odds are Marcus Aurelius never really uttered those words. But if you lived in Buffalo anytime in the last 60 years, this quote rings so true. Residents here, walked with our heads down, as if our city had become the butt of a joke. Just mention Wide Right, No Goal, The Peace Bridge, and Bethlehem Steel, and the gut punch is evident on the face of any life long Buffalo Resident. It’s another to survive and come back stronger than ever! The fear of even saying that to some people, led most of us to brush off anything good, in the fear that it would vanish just like Bass Pro Shop (Look it up)!

So if you don’t live in Buffalo, not your fault. Not everyone can live in a city as cool as Buffalo! If you do live here, you know just how great it can be. For a long time the city sat in a constant malaise, anyone who’s lived here since the 70’s knows of what I’m saying. It’s gone now, but for so long it seemed like even when something good was going on, the thought would creep in, “Oh we’re gonna screw that up”. But in the last few years, some small development’s have heightened the interest of residents in the Queen City. Developments like Canalside, HarborCenter, UB2020, and Hotel Lafayette just to name a few, have this city back on the right track.

Buffalonians care for and take our city and its quirky traditions very seriously, and don’t like to be made fun of. With New York City less than 400 miles away, for a long time Buffalo was an unknown entity in a state where it’s been the second largest city in said state. Being an afterthought has taken its toll on the Residents here in Western New York, but finally a light at the end of the tunnel has become visible. Will it lead us to the glory days of the early 20th century when Buffalo had a population that was near six hundred thousand? Time will tell, but until then I for one am not going back to the days where we hung our heads in shame, whatever the future holds here in the Queen City it will be bright!
